Chapter Ten
Nathanâs kisses were perfect, Kayley concluded. Each one had been exactly right, from the first one at the lighting to these, in front of the Trim-a-Tree. Perfect pressure, perfect lip movement, with just the tip of his tongue to tease her with. This kiss was one of promise, not lascivious or overbearing. Perfect for a romantic stroll in the prettiest town in New England.
Families with young children had disappeared by the time theyâd returned from dinner. The square was occupied by couples or groups of friends in their teens.
She and Nathan werenât the only ones enjoying a happy kiss here and there. It was a night for Christmas magic. Love magic.
The idea pulled her up short. She ended the sweet kiss and stepped back while clearing her throat. She might consider love magic to be a great angle for a marketing campaign, but thatâs all it was.
He slung his arm across her shoulders, and she kept hers at his waist. Comfortable, friendly, affectionate, and a sign to anyone interested enough to look that they were on a date. Maybe dating. Dating meaning plural dates, regular dates. Kissing and hugging dates.
Now she was, what? Eleven-teen?
She raised her face to study the nice line of his jaw, showing a bit of blond-red stubble now. âWeâre keeping this light, right?â
âAbsolutely,â he agreed. âLight. Weâre getting to know each other slowly. Thereâs no rush. Iâm not going anywhere.â
âYou donât have a career to get back to?â
âYou mean a glass tower, high-powered career? No. Thatâs not me. Iâm a mechanic or auto technician if you prefer. In Chicago I had my own shop, but things in my life changed and I decided to sell the shop to my crew. I knew the house in Dickens would need a lot of attention, and here I am.â He smirked. âYou could have asked sooner if you were curious about what I do for a living.â
âI didnât want to pry.â But if heâd sold a business then he could probably afford the renovations. It made sense too that heâd want a tenant fairly early in the process. âSo, you know how to fix cars butâ.â She cut off her comment because he tucked his chin in a defensive move.
âA man can be mechanically inclined while being carpentry challenged at the same time. I can fix anything motorized, do the tech work with vehicle computer systems, but put a level in my hand? Not so much.â He laughed good naturedly. âThis is a humbling lesson Iâve been taught by failing in your apartment.â
âCan you afford to pay for a contractor?â The moment the words were out, she saw them for what they were; rude. âSorry, I donât mean to be nosy.â
âItâs okay. Yes, I can hire Jon, even without a friends and family discount.â The light in his eyes read like humor, but beneath it she saw a mystery.
âWe still have a lot to learn about each other. And tons of time to do it.â She wrapped her arm around his and snugged into his side, content.
